About
Freddy
Bienstock: In 1957, Freddy married Miriam Abramson (a co-founder of Atlantic Records) and in 1966 acquired the Hill and Range UK affiliate Belinda Music which he renamed Carlin Music Corporation after his daughter Caroline, the present Chief Operating Officer of Carlin America. He soon expanded the Carlin Music catalog by associations with such hit makers as the Kinks, the Animals, Cliff Richards and the Shadows, in addition to representing Jobete Music, the publishing arm of Motown Records. Three years later, Freddy left Hill and Range to form The Hudson Bay Music Company with songwriters Leiber and Stoller and rapidly acquired such major assets as the Koppelman and Rubin music firms, which published the songs of Bobby Darin,Tim Hardin and John Sebastian, and later, the label and publishing divisions of two seminal rhythm and blues companies, Starday and King Records. His holdings were further enlarged by the acquisitions of Herald Square Music and Times Square Music, the New York Times music firms that were the preeminent Broadway show publishers of their era with scores such as Fiddler on the Roof, Cabaret, Company, Follies and Godspell, and hits by songwriters Peter Allen, Marvin Hamlisch, Carole Bayer Sager, etc. When his partnership with Leiber and Stoller ended in 1980, Freddy, along with the estates of Oscar Hammerstein II and Richard Rodgers, acquired Edward B. Marks Music Co., the publishers of George M. Cohan, Billie Holiday (Fine and Mellow, God Bless the Child, etc.), Ernesto Lecuona (Malaguena, The Breeze and I), Jim Steinman (Meat Loaf, etc.) in addition to numerous classic American song standards and works by such significant serious composers as William Bolcom, Norman Dello Joio and Roger Sessions. Soon after, Freddy acquired and became the largest stockholder and Chairman of Chappell and Co., which he then sold to Warner Communications several years later. Still a driving force in music publishing, FREDDY BIENSTOCK is a Board Member of both the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) and the National Music Publishers Association (NMPA). He continues to operate Carlin Music Corp. in England, with its recorded music library currently being the second largest UK company in its field, and is also the Chairman of his many US firms under the umbrella name of Carlin America, Inc., among the most successful independent music publishing conglomerates in the world today.
